blogathon 2008: countdown to insomnia!

on july 26, i will not sleep.

from 5 am to 5 am the next morning, i will be blogging.

yup, i’m participating in this year’s blogathon, a marathon in which selected bloggers such as raul and rebecca, bloggers participate to raise awareness and funds for their favourite charities.

for 24 hours, every 30 minutes, i’ll be posting a blog entry.

the charity i’ve selected is the canadian mental health association (vancouver/burnaby branch), an organization that i’ve been very proudly part of for the last three years. their mission statement is:

CMHA vancouver-burnaby promotes mental wellness and increases understanding of mental health issues through innovative and collaborative approaches in the areas of public education, accessible services and personal empowerment.

one of the reasons why i am so proud of this organization is that it really stands behind its mission statement. CMHA (van/bby) is doing fabulous and often groundbreaking work in areas such as employment counselling for people with mental health issues, recreation for children of parents with mental illness, and social enterprise (e.g. they have grown and mentored a successful janitorial company run and operated by people with often severe mental health issues).

even though i have no idea how i’ll manage to stay up for 24 hours, i’m very excited about this project, and hope lots and lots of you, my dear readers, will participate through reading, commenting and donating.

i think i’ll also have a prize. maybe one each for highest donation, most comments and most link love? what do you think?

    Isabella,

I certainly will be sleeping on that night, and very happily so.

But I do admire the efforts of yourself and other bloggers who are participating in this worthy cause.

The charity you mentioned above sounds very worthwhile. I used to have a close friend who has an attention deficit disorder. I saw how his employment councilors really worked with him to find suitable part time work, and the positive impact their work had upon his difficult life.

How are you going to stay awake? I hope you like coffee!

    Cheers

Isabella, what a wonderful way to contribute!
I will be recovering from the Mount Pleasant Pool Party July 26th (1-3PM) and contemplating mental health. Will find out about the wireless so you can still go.
Suggestion for staying awake: chocolate coated coffee beans – delicious and effective!

    Good luck to you Isabelle.

I hope lack of sleep will not be too much of an ordeal for you nor have any ill effect on your mental health.
Sleep is very important. Maybe you can cat nap a few minutes at a time between bloggs?
Sleep is especially important for most people with mental health problems but a one off 24 hour period on free will will do you no harm. I have just checked on this by consultation with my higher self.

    So goodness bless you.

Hey Isabella, thanks for doing this for CMHA-VB, it is nice to see a board member supporting us and the work we do. I personally work in Supported Employment for people with a mental health issue. They are people that years ago were thought by many opeople not to be employable. Well they were wrong, many people in this program ( 70%) have gone on to employment and are doing very well. This year we celebrated by honouring the people in our program that had gotten jobs, we also asked some employers to ber reconized as well. One of the highlights of the evening was introducing the first client to get a job when the prograsm fiorst started ten years ago. He has had the same job for the last ten years. We are so proud of him and what we do.

i hope you have a delightful time of it. i’m a little curious about what 48 blog posts could look like in such a short time. CMHA is lucky to have you contribute to them in this way!

    Hi isabella,
Unfortunately there is no wireless at Mount Pleasantcc, but Paul said you can use the connection in his office if you want to stop by on Saturday.
    Best wishes!

    Hi Isabelle-
Thanks for your creative contribution to an organization which is still very close to my heart. I was the Controller at CMHA-VB for ten years before I left in 2003 to go back to school — in my case, Art School (Emily Carr), from which I just graduated this spring. I have always thought that one can tell a lot about the heart of an organization by the way they say “goodbye” — and my sendoff was one of celebration that I was taking a risk to follow my dream. No wonder I still am in touch, five years later!

    Hey Isabella:
I enjoyed our dinner together and walk in the woulds (woods, but that was a nice little Freudian, eh?) Thursday. I am just about to resume my hike in Pacific Spirit Park and I will be thinking and praying for you as you stay up all night. Bless you, kiddo!
