once a month, the CMHA puts together a list of fun activities all over the city. here’s what’s happening in august – some absolutely wonderful stuff:

  • a block party (i love block parties!)
  • an arts’ festival in north vancouver
  • another culture crawl (i thought that happened only in november. what do i know!)
  • a world poetry event at the library, including work by alex winstanely, who will be featured here later
  • and a dance festival.

10th annual west end summer block party
11 am – 2 pm saturday, august 9
gordon neighbourhood house
1000 block of broughton street (between comox and nelson)

this is a free event with live street entertainment featuring eve smith, tropical heat steel drum band, a clown, and much more! there will also be a huge children’s carnival with games and prizes, face painting and tattoo booths, 25 cent hot dogs, seniors’ tea and tarts, and a youth corner! come join the fun!! everyone is welcome!

harmony arts festival celebrates its 17th anniversary of highlighting the talent of north shore artists. experience this 10 day celebration of community and art that showcases the finest creative performing arts and visual arts talent from the north shore. there will be speakers, fountain concerts, craft markets, free movies and much more. visit the website for full schedule of this 10 day celebration.

the crawl includes many community-initiated events: musical, theatrical and dance performances, visual arts displays, festivals, museum and heritage exhibitions, culinary and winery experiences, art-walks, and more.

enjoy poets and music from around the world, presented bilingually. hear from senka kovacevic, ben nuttall-smith, seann traviller, and alex winstanley as well as a screening of the short film locked out. open to all ages.

all over the map outdoor dance and music series

ron basford park, granville island
2pm sundays, july 6-august 24

new works is proud to announce the 2008 all over the map series. these six free dance and music performances take place outdoors on granville island in july and august and are a treat for dance and music fans, families and passers-by. this year’s line-up includes characteristic blend of music and dances from all over the world.

don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes, as all over the map performances have been known to get audiences moving!

all performances take place on sundays in july and august at 2pm at ron basford park (beside performance works), on the calm east side of granville island. come sit under the shade of the trees and enjoy an exhilarating one-hour show. all shows move indoors in case of rain.
