plurking

the first time i ever came across the concept of coaching was in teri e belf’s book, simply live it up. as soon as i saw it, i had to get it – after all it had an orange cover, had fractals on it (yes, i’m a sucker for nice-looking covers), and mentioned brief solutions, a type of counselling i’ve been interested for a long time.

it’s a fun book, i highly recommend it. one of the words she uses is

PLURK

that’s “play and work with the ‘you’ in the middle”.

can’t go wrong with that, can you?

examples of plurking are

chore plurk
why turn chores into a chore? there are ways to make them fun – actually, there are lots of ways. i think the main reason why we don’t use them is because we are so entrenched in the idea that chores are a drag. one of the things i like doing is turning fast, driving music full blast and racing through the house doing a 20-minute quick cleanup.

word plurk
here’s what teri says: “tumbling with words keeps us in plurking mode. as the sole proprietors of our word, we command our plurk allies.” these allies are doodles, mindmaps, singing, thesauri, the back of a cereal box – no end to them. (actually, i have a blog post about that up my sleeve).

workplace plurk
who says you have to work at your desk or in the office? i like sitting on my front steps with my laptop. my cell phone can go anywhere (i make a lot of work related calls when i’m out for a walk). and we all know how reading material cries out for a coffee shop – but why not try out other locations? university libraries are interesting, too, or hospital cafeterias, or hotel lounges …

by the way, research biologist tom schneider independently came up with the word plörk:

plörk, plurk: [pronunciation: plûrk as in `work’ and `urge’. function: noun. etymology: english from play and work] … plörk is what scientists do. it is the enthusiastic, energetic application of oneself to the task at hand as a child excitedly plays; it is the intense arduous, meticulous work of an artist on their life-long masterpiece; it is joyful work.

so – have you been plurking lately?
